Opinion: Tariffs forget the deeper logic of civilization

With all the talk about tariffs, we might put them into a wider context: Let’s momentarily set aside the contradictions of the moment — like funding a looming tax cut with tariff proceeds we hope to negotiate away, or trying to revive domestic production of critical goods while inciting retaliatory tariffs on the very components those goods require.
