The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was held in secrecy. When anxious citizens gathered outside Philadelphia’s Independence Hall to learn the outcome, an inquisitive lady asked Ben Franklin if America had a republic or monarchy. He replied wisely: “A republic, madam, if you can keep it.”
